Scorn

If you’ve ever been interested in horror art, you have no doubt comes across the artists H. R. Giger and Zdzisław Beksiński (If not, make sure to look them up!). Scorn takes the fantastic visuals of these artists to inspire perhaps the biggest horror game this October. Described as a first-person biopunk survival horror this is one of the most fascinating looking games to come out this year.

Scorn follows a human, or humanoid, lost on an alien world, covered in nightmarish techno-organic life forms and structures. It looks visually stunning and downright terrifying. There are combat elements to help you survive, with the mix of biological and technological weapons looking fantastic. The game looks disgusting, in the best way possible. It has a similar vibe to Alien and SOMA, which are some of the best horror comparisons one can make.

Scorn releases on the 14th of October on Xbox Series X/S and Steam.

No More Room in Hell 2

No More Room in Hell had its humble start as a Half-Life 2 mod, even being praised as mod of the year in 2011 by PC gamer, Mod DB and GameFront. It was subsequently released as a stand-alone, and is now receiving a long awaited sequel.

No More Room in Hell 2 is a zombie survival game taking influence from George A. Romero. It’s an FPS cooperative game, with up to 8 players facing off against hordes of the undead. The maps contain randomized elements and spawns to keep the gameplay fresher than the corpses you fight. Fans of series such as Left4Dead will love this one. It’s one of the biggest horror games releasing this October and offers players a more action-based horror game to play with friends.

No More Room in Hell 2 releases on 31 October on Steam.

The Unliving

Ever wanted to be a Necromancer? Do you enjoy Rogue-lite RPGs? Then look no further. The Unliving is a delightful looking pixel art game, that drenches you in blood as you lead an army of the dead to take over the world. The best part about being a Necromancer is the more enemies you kill, the more soldiers you have. The world is randomly generated and populated with traps, monsters, villages and fortifications to take. All the while there are strange notes and answers to find as you recover the Necromancers lost memories. This game is a different pace to the others on the list, but it’s received some positive buzz and looks like a fantastic game for those who like horror monsters, without the all-out scares.

The Unliving releases on the 31st October on Steam.

Cthulhu: Book of the Ancients

Lovecraft inspired detective horrors are a popular genre amongst scare fans. Cthulhu: Books of the Ancients looks to continue this trend. This game is a first-person horror which follows a detective on the search for 6 missing children. You must solve puzzles in the University of Miskatonic, ideally without losing your mind in the process. You will be dealing with demons, rituals, magic and, of course, Cthulhu. Maybe one day we will see games delve into the other Lovecraftian gods such as Yog-Sothoth.

The games trailer looks promising with great visuals and bizarre locations fitting for a Lovecraft inspired game. If you haven’t had your fill of Cosmic-Horror detective stories yet then this will be a great addition to your collection.

Cthulhu: Book of the Ancients releases on the 31st October on Steam.

A Plague Tale: Requiem

A Plague Tale: Innocence was a major hit that received critical acclaim, and it now has a sequel coming out this October 2022, which will be one of the biggest horror themed games this year. Whilst not strictly a horror, as the original was described as an action-adventure/stealth game, it does contain enough horror elements to make the list.

The sequel, A Plague Tale: Requiem, continues the journey of Amicia and Hugo. As Hugo’s powers reawaken the siblings must make their way to a mysterious island that may have the secret to saving Hugo. The continuation of the franchise comes with high expectations and buzz and will hopefully be as good or even better than it’s beginning. No doubt it will bring the striking visuals and dark compelling story we have come to expect.

A Plague Tale: Requiem releases on the 18th October on Nintendo Switch, PS5, Xbox Series X/S and Steam.

Special Mentions and Indie Offerings

These may be the biggest horror games releasing this October 2022, but there’s a couple extra releases that may pique your interest. Check out these upcoming games and indie titles.

Resident Evil Village Shadows of Rose

Whilst not a full new game, there is a reason to be excited for Resident Evil fans. The new DLC, Shadows of Rose, is approximately 4 hours of content. The DLC will follow Ethan Winters daughter Rose in a third person horror experience. It will take place 16 years after the main story. Enemies seem to do more damage, but Rose has powers to help even the playing field. The Tokyo Game Show trailer tells us the story takes place inside the mind of the Megamycete so things will likely get bizarre.

Shadows of Rose releases on 28th October along with the Winters Expansion on PS4/5, Xbox One and Series X/S and Steam.

Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed

Yes, I know it’s not a horror, but it is ghosts, and thus relevant to Halloween. The game is a 4-person multiplayer where you play as a ghost or Ghostbuster. It’s described as having an FPS design with asymmetric gameplay. If you’re looking for a spooky themed game to play with friends, this is a strong contender. You could also check out Midnight Ghost Hunt that plays in a similar way.

Ghostbuster: Spirits Unleashed releases on the 18th October on PS4/5, Xbox One and Series X/S and The Epic Games Store for PC.

Indie Offerings and Smaller Releases

  • The Backrooms Multiplayer: The Backrooms has a cult following from it’s creepypasta origins, and there is a multiplayer mode releasing this October, although the release date is yet to be announced.
  • Faith: The Unholy Trinity: Retro games fans rejoice. This is an 8-bit game based around the 1980s Satanic Panic. Take control of a priest investigating a rural town beset by demonic possessions. The game is receiving its third chapter on October 21st.
  • Cultic: Perhaps 8-bit is a bit too retro for you. If that’s the case, then Cultic may be for you. This game plays like Doom, but in the mid 19th century wherein you must fight crazed cultists. Cultic releases on October 13th
  • Hell is Others: This game is a top-down shooter mixed with survival horror. This take on the genre should be fresh and exciting for survival horror fans looking for something a little different. The planned release date is October 20th.
