Mortal Shell II Overview

Mortal Shell II is a dark fantasy action RPG developed by Cold Symmetry and published by Playstack. Serving as a standalone sequel to Mortal Shell, the game greatly expands the scale of its predecessor with a compact interconnected open world, deeper weapon customization, more elaborate combat, and a stronger focus on unrestricted exploration.

Players take the role of the Harbinger, a being destined to reclaim the blessed Undermether’s stolen Ova from the powerful creatures guarding them. Across a ruined world filled with forgotten temples, forests, frozen graves, bone-carved citadels, and hostile inhabitants, players can discover and possess the abandoned bodies of legendary warriors known as Shells.

Rather than locking players into a single character or combat class, Mortal Shell II features eight playable Shells. Each has its own strengths and unique abilities, allowing players to experiment with different approaches while uncovering the lost memories and history connected to each warrior.

Mortal Shell II Gameplay

Mortal Shell II retains the deliberate, high-stakes action RPG foundation of the original while making major changes to combat, exploration, weapons, and character progression. Battles remain focused on timing, positioning, enemy posture, and carefully chosen attacks, but the sequel removes one of the genre’s most familiar limitations: stamina management.

Possess Eight Different Shells

The returning Shell system remains central to the game. The dormant bodies of eight forgotten warriors are hidden throughout the world, and discovering a Shell allows the Harbinger to awaken and possess it.

Every Shell provides its own innate strengths and unique abilities. Finding additional Shells therefore does more than expand the available character roster; it gives players new ways to approach combat and build a playstyle around different abilities. Exploring each Shell’s lost memories also reveals more about the warrior who once inhabited the body.

Stamina-Free Melee and Ranged Combat

One of the biggest changes in Mortal Shell II is its stamina-free combat system. Attacking and performing combat actions are no longer governed by a traditional stamina meter, creating a more aggressive and flexible fighting system while still demanding careful timing and tactical decisions.

Enemies have posture that can be broken through the correct use of attacks and combat tactics. Shattering an opponent’s posture creates opportunities to land critical strikes and capitalize on openings before the enemy can recover.

Combat also combines melee weapons and powerful sidearms. Players can move between close-range weapons and ranged options rather than relying entirely on swords or other traditional fantasy armaments. Medieval firearms and other unusual weapons expand the available offensive strategies, particularly when dealing with dangerous enemies from different ranges.

Upgrade Weapons and Develop Your Fighting Style

Weapons feature extensive upgrade options, giving players greater control over their preferred combat setup. Both melee and ranged weaponry can form part of a character build, while the abilities granted by different Shells provide another layer of customization.

The combination of Shell abilities, weapon selection, weapon upgrades, ranged attacks, posture damage, and critical strikes allows players to develop different approaches rather than following a single predetermined combat style.

Explore a Compact Interconnected Open World

Unlike the more restricted structure of its predecessor, Mortal Shell II places a much greater emphasis on free exploration. Its world is described as expansive but deliberately compact, with interconnected routes and hidden areas designed to reward players for leaving the main path.

Exploration can lead to new Shells, weapons, upgrades, story elements, curiosities, and other discoveries. Locations range from derelict temples dedicated to ancient deities to forbidden forests, icy burial grounds, and imposing citadels constructed from bone.

Fight Through More Than 60 Dungeons

Scattered throughout the world are more than 60 dungeons. These locations provide additional challenges outside the main routes and give players opportunities to put their accumulated Shell abilities and upgraded weapons to use.

The interconnected world and large number of optional areas make exploration an important part of progression. Players willing to investigate areas away from the most direct route can strengthen their arsenal and discover additional pieces of the game’s world and narrative.

Mortal Shell II Story and Setting

The story follows the Harbinger through a shattered dark fantasy world dominated by dangerous creatures and false gods. The Harbinger has been prophesied to recover the Undermether’s stolen Ova, which are guarded by formidable beings spread throughout the ravaged world.

Much of the wider narrative is also tied to the forgotten warriors whose Shells have been left behind. By locating their bodies and uncovering their lost memories, players can piece together the stories and secrets associated with each Shell while progressing through the larger conflict.

The setting maintains the bleak atmosphere associated with Mortal Shell while substantially increasing the scope of the environments available to explore.
