There is also a Skip Ahead to Cost of Hope option for players who want to jump directly into the expansion without replaying the campaign.
1. How to Start Cost of Hope in STALKER 2
The normal way to start Cost of Hope is to install the DLC, load an eligible campaign save, and progress beyond the Lesser Zone. Once you reach the correct story point, the new DLC content becomes available through your PDA.
- Install the Cost of Hope DLC and load your campaign.
- Complete the Lesser Zone and continue until the main quest Back to the Slag Heap begins.
- Wait for Boozer to contact you over the radio.
- Open your PDA and track the new Terra Incognita quest.
- Travel to the Slag Heap in the Garbage region.
- Find Chatterbox sitting to the left of the bar counter.
- Bring a few bottles of Beer, as you need them to get Chatterbox talking.
- Ask him about the Iron Forest and how to enter it.
You can start the DLC from a save that has progressed beyond Answers Come at a Price, provided you have not crossed the base game’s point of no return.
How to Start Cost of Hope From an Existing Save
An existing save is the best option if you want the DLC to fit naturally into your current campaign. Your weapons, armor, artifacts, inventory, and story decisions remain part of Skif’s progression rather than being replaced by a premade DLC character.
Load a save from anywhere between the beginning of Answers Come at a Price and the point of no return. Cost of Hope then integrates into that campaign as its requirements are met.
- Install the DLC.
- Load your latest save before the point of no return.
- Check your PDA and Journal for new objectives.
- If the later part of Cost of Hope has not unlocked, make sure you have completed A Minor Incident.
- Continue the campaign until the DLC objective appears.
How to Skip Straight to Cost of Hope
If you do not have an eligible save or simply want to play the expansion immediately, STALKER 2 includes a dedicated Skip Ahead to Cost of Hope option when starting a new game.
- Select New Game.
- Choose the option for the DLC content.
- Select Skip Ahead to the Cost of Hope.
- Choose either Early Part or Advanced Start.
- Begin the generated campaign and follow the Cost of Hope objectives.
This creates a new save positioned at the required part of the main story, so you do not have to manually replay the opening hours.
2. Cost of Hope Story Requirements
You do not need a completed STALKER 2 save. In fact, the expansion is designed to run alongside the base-game campaign, with new content unlocking at different stages of Skif’s journey.
The first DLC content becomes accessible shortly after leaving the Lesser Zone. A later section unlocks after completing A Minor Incident, so do not expect the entire expansion to open immediately.
| Story Progress | Cost of Hope Access |
|---|---|
| Before leaving Lesser Zone | DLC story not available yet |
| Answers Come at a Price begins | Early Cost of Hope content becomes available |
| After A Minor Incident | Later DLC storyline becomes available |
| Before Down Below / point of no return | Existing campaign can still access the DLC |
| After finishing the main story | Load an earlier eligible save or use Skip Ahead |
3. Early Part or Advanced Start – Which One to Choose?
The Skip Ahead option gives you two ways to enter the expansion. Early Part preserves more of the DLC’s gradual introduction, while Advanced Start takes you directly to the later stage where the larger Cost of Hope storyline opens up.
Early Part
Choose Early Part if you want to experience Cost of Hope in its intended chronological order.
- Starts around the point where the first DLC content becomes available.
- Lets you experience the early Cost of Hope material.
- Requires additional main-story progression before the later DLC section opens.
- Is the better option for a first playthrough if you care about story continuity.
Advanced Start
Choose Advanced Start if your main goal is to reach the substantial DLC content as quickly as possible.
- Skips farther into the base campaign.
- Places you near the later Cost of Hope starting point.
- Avoids replaying the earlier main-story missions.
- Gives you the choice between Spark and Ward starting states.
For players returning specifically for the DLC, Advanced Start is the fastest option.
4. Spark or Ward Advanced Start Choice
When selecting Advanced Start, you can choose a Spark or Ward version of the generated campaign. This sets the relevant base-game story state for the save rather than changing the central Duty-versus-Freedom storyline of Cost of Hope itself.
Choose:
- Spark if you want the generated save to follow the Spark-aligned base-game path.
- Ward if you prefer the Ward-aligned base-game route.
The choice mainly determines the main campaign state around Skif. You will still make the important Duty and Freedom decisions inside Cost of Hope as you progress through the expansion.
5. Do You Need to Finish STALKER 2 Before Cost of Hope?
No. Do not finish the base game just to start Cost of Hope.
The DLC is specifically designed to take place during the main campaign, and the safest place for an existing save is after Answers Come at a Price but before the point of no return.
If you already completed the game, STALKER 2 does not provide normal post-ending free roam that lets you simply continue into Cost of Hope. Instead, either:
- Load a manual save from before the point of no return, or
- Start a new campaign using Skip Ahead to Cost of Hope.
