PAYDAY 3 Update 3.8 is live and brings the biggest technical change the heist shooter has had since launch. The game now runs on Unreal Engine 5, the install size drops from 65GB to 45GB, and the Cook Off rework strips out the bag limit that capped runs at 19 bags.
August 25 was also the day every paid heist DLC left storefronts, ahead of the September anniversary update that folds all heists into the base game.
1. PAYDAY 3 Update 3.8 Release Date and Download Size
Update 3.8 was released on August 25, 2026, across PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. The Unreal Engine 5 upgrade is the centerpiece of the patch, and it immediately reduces the install size on every platform.
- Update version: 3.8, listed as the August Update.
- Release date: August 25, 2026.
- Install size: down from 65GB to ~45GB.
- Headline changes: Unreal Engine 5 upgrade, Cook Off rework, new Contracts.
- Storefront change: all paid heist DLCs delisted the same day.
2. Unreal Engine 5 Upgrade and Performance Changes
PAYDAY 3 has moved from Unreal Engine 4 to Unreal Engine 5, three years after its launch on the older engine. Starbreeze frames the move as groundwork for future features rather than a visual overhaul, so the clearest day-one win is the ~20GB reduction in install size.
What the Engine Upgrade Changes for Players
The engine move brings texture and lighting work alongside the storage saving, and those changes apply across every heist in the game.
- Smaller install: the game now takes ~45GB instead of 65GB.
- Texture optimization: world object textures were rebuilt to improve memory usage and performance.
- Unified ambient occlusion: shading and lighting values now match across the whole game.
- Cleaner upscaling: image clarity was improved when running upscalers and anti-aliasing.
How to Fix PAYDAY 3 Crashes on Steam After Update 3.8
On Steam, start by removing mods because the engine change invalidates files that worked on the previous build. Clear those first, then verify the installation before treating the update itself as the problem.
An engine change invalidates mods that worked on the previous build, including mods that look unrelated to anything in the patch. Clear those first, then repair the installation before assuming the update itself is at fault.
- Remove all mods and mod loaders from the PAYDAY 3 installation folder, then relaunch the game and test it clean.
- Open Steam Properties by right-clicking PAYDAY 3 in your Steam library and selecting Properties from the menu.
- Verify the game files under the Local Files tab by selecting Verify Integrity of Game Files.
- Let the check finish before relaunching, since the process runs long on slower drives.
3. Cook Off Rework and Bag Limit Removal
The Cook Off rework removes the bag limit entirely. The heist shipped with a hard ceiling of 19 bags, which ended runs regardless of how well the team was holding the house, and that cap is now gone.
How the Bag Limit Removal Changes Cook Off Runs
Cooking now continues past the old 19-bag ceiling, so a run ends when the crew decides to leave rather than when the counter fills. Survival, ammo, and supply calls become the real limit on a session.
- No bag cap: cooking continues for as long as the crew holds the house.
- Player-set endpoint: the escape decision replaces the forced cutoff.
- Payout display: payout values now read up to 1,000,000,000.
New Lighting and Payout Display in Cook Off
Alongside the cap removal, Cook Off received a new lighting pass in line with the reworks given to Turbid Station, Touch the Sky, and 99 Boxes. The payout display was also widened so it keeps pace with uncapped runs instead of breaking at the old maximum.
4. All Paid Heist DLCs Delisted on August 25
Every paid heist DLC was pulled from all storefronts on August 25, 2026, the same day Update 3.8 went live. Owners retain full access to everything they bought, and the delisting clears the way for the September update, which makes all heists part of the base game.
Full List of Delisted Heist DLCs and Bundles
Seven individual heist DLCs came off sale, covering the game’s paid heist releases from Syntax Error through Shopping Spree.
- Syntax Error Heist
- Boys in Blue Heist
- Houston Breakout Heist
- Fear & Greed Heist
- Party Powder Heist
- Delivery Charge Heist
- Shopping Spree Heist
Six bundles containing one or more of those heists were delisted at the same time:
- Chapter 1: Syntax Error Bundle
- Chapter 2: Boys in Blue Bundle
- Chapter 3: Houston Breakout Bundle
- Chapter 4: Fear & Greed Bundle
- Year 1 Edition and Year 1 Pass
- 2nd Anniversary Bundle
Weapon, Tailor, and Character Packs Stay on Sale
The delisting covers heist content only. Weapon Pack, Tailor Pack, and Character Pack DLCs are unaffected and remain purchasable on every storefront.
What Heist DLC Owners Get in September
Players who bought heist DLCs before the delisting will receive compensation items when the September update goes live, with the amount scaling based on how many heists they owned.
- Any heist DLC owned: the S40 “Partisan” Pistol Variant, which is fully moddable.
- Each individual heist DLC owned: a unique preset mask themed around that heist.
- All seven heist DLCs owned: the “Flame Keeper” preset mask on top of the rest.
5. Full PAYDAY 3 Update 3.8 Patch Notes
Beyond the two headline features, Update 3.8 is a fix-heavy patch that targets client desync on moving objects, cosmetic loading hangs, and preplanning favors that were being consumed on restarts.
Gameplay Fixes
These corrections target vehicle physics, enemy cover behavior, and the client desync that left cameras, sensors, and drones out of sync for anyone who was not hosting.
- Escape van: adjusted center of mass so the van no longer bounces up and down while moving.
- Police cover: AI can now take cover behind first responder police cars.
- Object flicker: fixed incorrect position and velocity calculations that made moving objects flicker.
- Client desync: moving cameras, sensors, and drones now move correctly for clients on Art Gallery, Turbid Station, and Delivery Charge.
- Cosmetics hang: applying multiple cosmetics at once no longer strands players on the Getting Ready screen.
- Preplanning favors: favors are no longer consumed every time a player restarts the heist.
- Techie glitch effect: the teammate HUD now updates correctly while the Techie glitch effect is active.
- Party restarts: hosts can restart from the result screen after creating a party with clients.
Skill and Art Fixes
Update 3.8 makes a single skill correction, paired with two art passes that change how the game looks across every heist.
- Bastion and Rabid: both skills now correctly prevent stagger effects.
- Crow animations: fixed distortion caused by incorrect texture settings.
- Ambient occlusion: values unified across the game for consistent lighting and shading.
Tech and Upscaler Changes
The upscaler stack received version bumps from all three vendors, and the settings menu now reports what is actually running rather than defaulting to None.
- DLSS: updated to version 8.5.0.
- FSR: updated to version 4.0.3.
- XeSS: updated to version 5.5.
- Anti-aliasing labels: enabling DLSS, FSR, or XeSS now displays the matching anti-aliasing option, a visual change with no effect on graphics or performance.
- Texture handling: world object textures optimized for better performance.
6. Heist Fixes in Update 3.8
Five heists received targeted fixes, with the reworked 99 Boxes and the new tutorial taking the largest share. Most of these close out geometry exploits and stealth breaks that survived the previous two updates.
99 Boxes Fixes
The reworked warehouse heist includes four fixes addressing blocked access, bag timers, and stealth-breaking bot behavior.
- Warehouse yard: players are no longer blocked from entering the central yard.
- Bag timers: degrading bag timers now match the timer shown in the HUD.
- Container doors: fixed players getting stuck inside container doors in the warehouse.
- Crew AI stealth: bots no longer leave the containers during stealth and alert guards or cameras.
Tutorial Fixes
The tutorial mission added in Update 3.6 receives four corrections, most of which seal off areas players were reaching ahead of schedule.
- Vault room: players can no longer access the room behind the vault.
- Vent exploit: fixed players falling out of bounds through a vent.
- Micro Camera: disabled in the tutorial.
- Train lighting: the train’s window lights now display correctly.
Turbid Station, Delivery Charge, and Shopping Spree Fixes
Three older heists receive single-issue fixes covering interaction text, escape van geometry, and guard pathing.
- Turbid Station: the board interaction now uses the localized “Take a note” text instead of “Memorize”.
- Delivery Charge: removed an extra escape van that kept falling through the level.
- Delivery Charge: guards no longer try to walk into the space occupied by the money truck.
- Shopping Spree: guards no longer escort players through the roped-off escalator.
7. Known Issues in Update 3.8 and Current Workarounds
Starbreeze shipped 3.8 with a documented list of known issues, and the PlayStation controller problem on PC is the one with a working fix available today. The rest are logged for a future hotfix.
PC Known Issues and Workarounds
PlayStation controllers register no input on PC after the update. Force-enabling Steam Input for PlayStation controllers in the PAYDAY 3 properties window restores control, with the trade-off that Xbox button glyphs display in-game instead of PlayStation glyphs.
- FSR Frame Interpolator: the setting does not function correctly.
- Menu purchases: on Steam, the Escape key fails to cancel a mod or weapon purchase. Decline with the mouse or complete the purchase to clear the prompt.
Xbox and General Known Issues
These entries apply across all platforms unless a line names a specific one, and the Sunburn bug is the only one that affects a build’s performance.
- Sunburn: the skill does not apply its debuff correctly.
- Smoke visibility: enemies can see players through smoke.
- Zappers: These units have difficulty targeting players.
- Results screen: the Weapon Experience and Favor tab can be inaccessible.
- Xbox lobbies: some players join invite-only lobbies without an invite from the lobby leader.
Heist Known Issues
Four heists have active issues after the update, mostly tied to enemy navigation and lighting rather than objectives.
- Shadow plane: a rare lighting bug produces a flat, static shadow plane during several heists.
- Turbid Station: SWAT units fail to leave their spawn points, which thins out enemy numbers.
- Turbid Station: Enemies walk and shoot through one of the basement doors.
- Fear & Greed: Crew AI can be stuck at the roof spawn location.
- Boys in Blue: SWAT units struggle to navigate around the gate at the back of the inner courtyard, and the colors in the evidence room appear desaturated.
- Delivery Charge: audio can drop out entirely except for gunshots and sound effects.
8. September Anniversary Updates
September marks the third anniversary of PAYDAY 3, and its anniversary update brings larger game-wide changes than Update 3.8. The headline change is that every heist, past and future, becomes part of the base game for all players.
- All heists free: past and future heists included in the base game with no ownership requirement.
- Campaign Mode: a completely rewritten storyline running through the heists.
- Weapon Perks: a new progression layer for weapons.
- Shooting Range: a dedicated space for testing loadouts.
- Enemy improvements: changes to enemy behavior across the game.
- Paid Crimebond Collection: a new collection containing a returning fan favorite weapon.
Pairing Campaign Mode with the reworked tutorial from Update 3.6 gives returning heisters a full start-to-finish run through the game for the first time.
