Prototype Gear is the new loot ceiling in The Division 2, sitting above every item quality that existed before Year 8 Season 1 Rise Up.
Use this guide on how to start Escalation, convert items at the Tinkering Station, find Prototype Cores, and choose the Augments worth prioritizing after the Y8S1.3 buff.
1. Prototype Gear in The Division 2
The Prototype Gear is the highest-quality item in The Division 2 as of Year 8 Season 1. It sits above High-End, Named, and Gear Set items, giving endgame agents a new way to improve existing builds.
Every Prototype piece uses purple rarity coloring in your inventory. Upgrading to this tier adds three main benefits:
- Massive Attribute Boosts: The old maximum value on High-End and Named gear becomes the new minimum on Prototype pieces, while the new maximum can reach up to 1.5x higher.
- Guaranteed Max Rolls: When you convert or find a Prototype piece, one attribute is guaranteed to hit the new maximum threshold.
- Unique Augments: Every Prototype item rolls with one Augment, which serves as a powerful passive bonus drawn from a shared pool.
Prototype Gear Restrictions
These restrictions apply as soon as an item becomes Prototype and stay in effect permanently to balance the massive power spike.
- No Recalibration: Once converted, a Prototype item cannot be optimized or recalibrated. All stats lock permanently.
- Skill Tier Warning: Skill Tier core attributes are currently unchanged when gear converts to Prototype. Ubisoft has issued an official warning against converting any armor with a Skill Tier core until a future update addresses this.
- Normalization Rules: In Raids, Incursions, and PvP modes like the Dark Zone and Conflict, Prototype stats are normalized to the lower end of the Prototype range, and Augments are disabled entirely.
2. How to Get Prototype Gear in The Division 2
There are two main routes to acquiring Prototype Gear. You can farm drops through Escalation runs, or you can convert a max-level item you already own through the Tinkering Station. Both are worth understanding fully before spending your first Prototype Core.
Escalation Drops and Requisition Caches
Escalation is the primary farming source for Prototype Gear. It is a highly challenging endgame activity that replays main missions and strongholds at increasing difficulty tiers, with higher tiers offering better loot and stronger Prototype rolls.
You must be Level 40 and have fully completed the main campaign to access this mode. To successfully run an Escalation mission and claim your powerful rewards, follow these exact steps:
- Open the Escalation panel at the Base of Operations located near the Countdown vendor.
- Select a mission from the weekly rotation, as five missions refresh every Tuesday.
- Choose a Tier between 1 and 10, then review the Tier cost, active Mutators, and reward preview.
- The lowest Tier is always free. Higher Tiers cost Escalation Tokens, with the cost scaling alongside the Tier level.
- Complete the run in a single attempt. There are no checkpoints, so a wipe or timer expiry fails the run and destroys your entry tokens.
Since Y8S1.3, Heroic-level rolls apply from Tier 0 to Tier 4, and Legendary-level rolls apply from Tier 5 onward. Focusing on mid-to-high Tiers is the most efficient path for quality gear and maximum ProtoCore returns from dismantling.
The Escalation Requisition Vendor also stands next to the Escalation panel at the Base of Operations. You can exchange Escalation Tokens directly for Prototype loot with no purchase limit. Three cache types are available for purchase.
- Prototype Random Cache: Rewards one completely random Prototype item.
- Prototype Gear Cache: A daily rotation featuring a specific equipment type, with higher odds for better rolls.
- Prototype Weapon Cache: A daily rotation featuring a specific weapon type, also with improved roll quality odds.
Tinkering Station Conversion
Converting a piece you already own is the highly targeted route to securing your perfect build. Most High-End, Named, and Gear Set items can be upgraded to Prototype through the Protolab tab at any Tinkering Station.
Exotics are non-convertible. Before converting, the chosen item must meet all three of the following strict requirements:
- Level Requirement: The item must be exactly Level 40.
- Rarity Requirement: The item must be High-End quality or above. Named and Gear Set pieces also qualify.
- Expertise Requirement: The item must reach Expertise Level 30. Upgrade costs were drastically reduced in Y8S1 to make this easier.
Fully optimizing the item beforehand is absolutely not required. The conversion automatically scales the piece as if it had been fully optimized, so those optimization resources can go toward other gear.
- Interact with any Tinkering Station at the Base of Operations or in the open world.
- Navigate directly to the Protolab tab.
- Select the eligible item you want to upgrade.
- Confirm the conversion, which will cost exactly 1 Prototype Core.
3. How to Get Prototype Cores
The Prototype Cores are the central resource for the entire Prototype system, and early Cores need a strict spending plan. Prioritize them in this order.
- Convert only Level 40, Expertise 30 pieces you plan to keep,
- Level build-defining Augments next,
- Save rerolls for pieces that already fit your loadout, since each reroll costs 1 Prototype Core.
They cover three separate mechanical uses at the Protolab inside the Tinkering Station. You will need a steady supply to accomplish the following progression upgrades:
- Upgrading Items: Converting eligible Level 40 gear directly into Prototype Gear.
- Leveling Augments: Advancing your Augment stats further to maximize your combat output.
- Rerolling Augments: Swapping out an undesirable Augment for a better option.
Because Cores are limited, treat dismantling weak Prototype drops as your main farm and use weekly group content as a supplement.
- Dismantling Prototype Gear: This is the primary source. Escalation drops sometimes have stronger attribute rolls than the piece you planned to convert. Keep the better drop and dismantle pieces with subpar rolls.
- Prototype Core Caches: This is the secondary source. Each of the two Raids and the Incursion drops one Core per character per week, making these a reliable supplement for organized groups.
4. All Augments and Best Build Pairings
Every Prototype item comes with one Augment drawn randomly from a shared pool. Any gear slot can roll any Augment regardless of item type, and Augments are not tied to specific gear categories the way traditional talents are.
They improve naturally through normal gameplay use, and their stats can be advanced further by spending Prototype Cores at the Protolab. Augments stack across all six gear slots, making full-loadout synergy the ultimate goal of any optimized Prototype build.
If an Augment does not fit your build, rerolling it costs 1 Prototype Core per attempt. After each reroll, you can choose to keep the new result or safely revert to the original. Review the full list of available Augments to plan your ideal combat loadout:
| Augment Name | Augment Combat Effect | Best Build Pairing |
|---|---|---|
| Quantum | Small chance to gain temporary damage immunity. | Survival |
| Echo | Each bullet can deal its damage a second time. | DPS |
| Atomize | Boosts grenade radius and overall damage output. | Grenades |
| Amalgam | Bullet hits can trigger a completely random status effect. | Status |
| Trapper | Extends the duration of all status effects you actively apply. | Status |
| Entropy | Converts a percentage of total Armor into bonus Health. | Tank or Hybrid |
| Anomaly | Skills convert a portion of damage dealt directly into healing. | Skill |
| Paradox | Chance to partially refill the magazine during sustained fire. | DPS |
| Synesthesia | Bullet hits can actively shorten skill cooldowns over time. | Skill |
Best Augments After the Y8S1.3 Buff
Patch Y8S1.3 increased the Level 10 values on four Augments. The gap between buffed and unbuffed Augments is now wide enough to fundamentally reshape how entire build archetypes are structured. Here are the post-Y8S1.3 maximum values at Level 10 for the buffed Augments:
- Anomaly: Increased from 32.90 percent to a massive 196 percent.
- Synesthesia: Increased from 30.10 percent to a highly effective 98 percent.
- Quantum: Increased from 19.60 percent to 32.20 percent.
- Amalgam: Increased from 16.10 percent to 30.10 percent.
Pick Augments by build role rather than chasing the highest number. Use these pairings as your first reroll targets for high-tier Escalation runs and Legendary missions:
- Skill Builds: Anomaly and Synesthesia are the strongest pairing in the current meta. Anomaly’s healing return handles survivability, and Synesthesia keeps high-uptime skills cycling continuously across six slots.
- DPS Builds: Echo and Paradox remain the most consistent damage picks. Echo gives each bullet a chance to double its damage, and Paradox keeps your magazine from draining during sustained fire.
- Status Effect Builds: Amalgam and Trapper compound each other perfectly. Amalgam procs random status effects on bullet hits, and Trapper actively extends those procs across your full loadout.
- Escalation Defense: Quantum is the strongest survival pick on higher Tiers where single-hit pressure is punishing. Running at least two Quantum slots before filling the rest with offensive Augments is highly recommended.
