The Division 2 Y8S3 Red Horizon – Full Update Guide

Year 8 Season 3: Red Horizon adds the Under Pressure Pressure Gauge, the uncapped Blackout Dark Zone, and three new Exotics. Use this guide to compare the biggest changes, rewards, builds, and season dates.

The Division 2 Y8S3 Red Horizon – Full Update Guide

The Division 2‘s Year 8 Season 3, titled Red Horizon, launches on August 27, 2026. It reshapes endgame play through the Under Pressure global modifier, a fully uncapped Blackout Dark Zone, three new Exotics, and a Determined rework that forces every marksman rifle build to change.

At the heart of this season is the Pressure Gauge, a combat meter that converts kills into escalating Status Effect bonuses. This guide covers everything in Y8S3, prioritizing the most impactful additions, such as the new arsenal and Dark Zone variants, before addressing the complementary quality-of-life updates.

1. Biggest Red Horizon Changes at a Glance

Red Horizon Release Date

Red Horizon Release Date

Year 8 Season 3 changes several major endgame systems, with the biggest additions centered on fire damage, a new PvP Dark Zone variant, marksman rifle balance, and the Cleaners taking over Washington, D.C.

  • New Exotics and Gear: Introduces the Fafnir Exotic Shotgun, Iron Will Exotic Chest, Loaded for Bear Exotic Gloves, and the Ember Engine Gear Set.
  • Under Pressure Modifier: A Pressure Gauge fills through kills and unlocks three Active Modifiers that no longer share a cooldown.
  • Blackout Dark Zone: The first fully non-normalized Dark Zone, where SHD Watch and Expertise power stay intact.
  • Determined Rework: The talent now matches Perfect Determined, and its body-shot chaining moves to the Iron Will chest piece.
  • Cleaner Takeover: Cleaners take Control Points and start Retaliations, with the 95 Company elite kill squad joining the roster.
  • Retaliation Anniversary: A dated Project Chain and a double-materials Surge window run through September.

2. New Weapons, Gear, and Talents

Fafnir Exotic Shotgun

Fafnir Exotic Shotgun

Y8S3 introduces three new Exotics, a new Gear Set, two Named chest pieces, two Named backpacks, and two Named weapons. The new arsenal is oriented heavily toward fire damage, Status Effects, and builds that feed the Pressure Gauge through kill quality rather than kill count.

Item Type Talent
Fafnir Exotic Shotgun Dragon’s Breath
Iron Will Exotic Chest Resolved
Loaded for Bear Exotic Gloves Afterburn
Ember Engine Gear Set Spontaneous Combustion
Trick Shot Named Chest Perfect Reassigned
Rushdown Named Chest Tag Team
Melon Baller Named Backpack Perfect Concussion
Keeper Named Backpack Perfect Protector
Teapot Named Weapon Perfect Boiling Point
Steamer Named Weapon Perfect Boiling Point

Exotic Weapons and Gear: Fafnir, Iron Will, and Loaded for Bear

Iron Will Exotic Chest

Iron Will Exotic Chest

Both launch Exotics sit on the free Season Pass track, so no purchase is needed to get them. Loaded for Bear arrives later as the Climax mission exclusive reward.

  • Fafnir (Exotic Shotgun): The Dragon’s Breath talent fires incendiary shells with a 40% chance to apply Burn per shot, and amplifies Weapon Damage by 50% of your Status Effect bonus. Fixed mods grant +15% Crit Chance, +5 Rounds, and +10% Weapon Handling.
  • Iron Will (Exotic Chest): The Resolved talent makes your next body shot count as a headshot on a 2-second PvE cooldown and a 3-second PvP cooldown. It requires an MMR, Rifle, or Pistol to be equipped.
  • Loaded for Bear (Exotic Gloves): The Afterburn talent applies stacks to enemies you hit, capped at 20 per target. Reloading consumes every stack to deal 2% Weapon Damage per stack.

Fafnir has one quirk that affects Burn uptime. Its application still obeys standard diminishing returns on enemies, so a target you have already burned repeatedly resists new applications.

Rotate targets instead of emptying a magazine into a single elite, and stack Status Effect rolls over raw Weapon Damage since the talent converts one into the other.

Ember Engine Gear Set and Brand Set Changes

Ember Engine Gear Set

Ember Engine Gear Set

The Ember Engine Gear Set is the season’s Status Effect centerpiece and the strongest partner for Fafnir. Its bonuses build toward a four-piece talent that converts any Status Effect into extra fire damage.

  • Set bonuses: 8% Skill Efficiency at 2 pieces, 30% Status Effect at 3 pieces, and Spontaneous Combustion at 4 pieces.
  • Spontaneous Combustion: Every Status Effect you apply has a 40% chance to also apply Burn. If the original effect was Burn, the enemy takes +25% Burn Damage for its duration.
  • Flashpoint (chest): Raises the Spontaneous Combustion Burn chance to 60%.
  • White Hot (backpack): Extends the Burn Damage debuff duration by 50%.

Ember Engine runs on far lower PvP values. In PvP, Spontaneous Combustion applies Burn at 8%, Flashpoint raises that to 12%, and White Hot extends the debuff by 12%. Build it for PvE and bring a different set into the Dark Zone.

True Patriot Buff

True Patriot Buff

Gear Sets are rebalanced around one principle this season: the harder a set is to use at full potential, the more it should pay back. This balance pass covers Red Core sets plus Ortiz: Exuro and True Patriot.

Brand Sets change through attribute swaps as well as tuning, so existing pieces will roll differently after the update:

  • Removed bonuses: Shock Resistance, Health, Incoming Repairs, and Swap Speed leave the pool.
  • Added bonus: Protection from Elites joins as a new Brand Set bonus.
  • Weapon bonus spread: Every weapon type now has one Brand offering that bonus at 1 piece and another at 2 pieces.
  • Increased Threat: Removed from Imminence Armaments and redistributed across Blue Core Brands.
  • Murakami Industries: Reverted to +35% Repair Skills at 2 pieces and +18% Skill Damage at 3 pieces.
  • No new Brands: Red Horizon is the last season to add Brand Sets. Future updates add Named pieces with Perfect Talents to existing Brands instead.

New Named Weapons and Gear

Steamer Named Weapon

Steamer Named Weapon

Four Named gear pieces and two Named weapons arrive across existing Brand Sets, with four carrying Perfect talent variants. Pick based on your damage source rather than raw stat rolls:

  • Trick Shot (Imminence Armaments chest): Perfect Reassigned loads 1 round of random special ammo into your sidearm on a kill. Cooldown: 8s.
  • Rushdown (Richter & Kaiser GmbH chest): Tag Team marks the last enemy damaged by a skill, and weapon damage on that target cuts active cooldowns by 12s. Cooldown: 4s.
  • Melon Baller (Airaldi Holdings backpack): Perfect Concussion raises weapon damage by 20% for 1.5s on headshots, extended to 5s with marksman rifles, and by 15% for 10s on headshot kills.
  • Keeper (5.11 Tactical backpack): Perfect Protector grants you +25% bonus armor and allies +35% of your armor when your shield takes damage. Cooldown: 3s.
  • Teapot and Steamer: Both carry Perfect Boiling Point, which gives the first 48% of your magazine -100% Critical Hit Chance and the rest 100%. The standard talent version sits at 53%.

Rushdown is the standout for skill builds, since a 12-second cooldown reduction on a 4-second internal cooldown removes most turret and drone downtime.

For Boiling Point weapons, stack Magazine Size rather than Reload Speed, and avoid Protected Reload, since every reload drops you back into the dead zone.

3. Under Pressure Modifiers and the Pressure Gauge

Y8S3 Seasonal Modifiers

Y8S3 Seasonal Modifiers

The Under Pressure global modifier runs on a Pressure Gauge that fills through combat actions and pays out stronger bonuses at four thresholds. Spend too long outside cover, and it decays, so the season rewards aggressive play that still respects cover discipline.

Alongside the Under Pressure modifier, the Cleaners define the season’s open-world pressure. For the full season, they spawn across Washington, D.C., take over Control Points, spawn activities, and start Retaliations in Named Zones.

During Retaliations against other factions, they build Agitation in place of Black Tusk, and the 95 Company elite kill squad spawns the same way BTSU Team 9 does.

The Pressure Gauge Mechanics

Under Pressure Global Modifier

Under Pressure Global Modifier

Kill quality matters more than kill count, because gauge actions stack. A headshot kill pays out for the kill itself and again for the headshot, so burn-focused headshot builds climb far faster than body-shot builds.

Kills, headshot kills, multikills, grenade kills, Skill kills, Status Effect kills, and fire kills all fill the gauge, and every kill from a squadmate adds 1% Pressure. Bonuses then step up at four thresholds:

  • 0% to 10%: No Status Effects bonus.
  • 10% to 35%: +15% Status Effects.
  • 35% to 65%: +25% Status Effects.
  • 65% to 90%: +40% Status Effects.
  • 90% to 100%: +65% Status Effects.

The gauge freezes while an Active Modifier runs and resets to zero when it ends, so time your activation around a full pull rather than a single elite. Cover and cover-to-cover moves halt decay by default.

Active Modifiers

Vicarious Combustion

Vicarious Combustion

Run Fiery Aura as your default. Its Damage Resistance and percentage-based Armor Regen carry solo play and Heroic content better than the alternatives, and its passive burn feeds the gauge without extra input.

None of the three share a cooldown this season, so activate them for dangerous pulls, survivability checks, or burn/headshot windows instead of saving them for a single elite. Each adds a secondary attribute from Level 3 onward.

  • Fiery Aura (Armor Regen): Grants +25% to +65% Damage Resistance, extra resistance while sprinting that reaches 100% at Level 5, and Armor Regen of 0.5% to 1.5% per second. Enemies entering 5m to 10m take Burn once each, and Level 5 returns 15% Bonus Armor per unique enemy burned.
  • Vicarious Combustion (Headshot Damage, up to 50%): A headshot on a burning enemy spreads Burn to everything within 10m to 20m, at the cost of reduced Burn Damage for the duration. At Level 5, headshots apply Burn directly with no pre-existing fire needed.
  • Signed, Shield, Delivered (Skill Efficiency, up to 25%): Increases Signature Weapon Range and Damage, plus Shield Health and Active Regen. Kills with a Signature Weapon, or with any weapon while a shield is up, refill your magazine without touching reserves. Level 5 extends the duration by 2s per Signature kill and 1s per shield kill, and both stack.

Passive and Hostile Modifiers

Leaky Valve

Leaky Valve

Red Horizon ships 20 Passive Modifiers across three roles: controlling how the gauge fills and drains, extending fire and Status Effect interactions, and swapping what the gauge pays out. Two pairs cancel each other, so avoid running New Formula Beta with Gamma, or All or Nothing with Kickstart.

The full list sits in the table below. Three shape builds more than the rest: Vacuum Seal removes decay entirely at the cost of half your gain, Delayed Venting moves the bonus thresholds down to 0%, 20%, 50%, and 80%, and New Formula: Gamma converts the primary bonus into Hazard Protection for tank builds.

Achilles' Heal Hostile Modifier

Achilles’ Heal Hostile Modifier

Three enemy-side Hostile Modifiers directly reduce the gauge, and setting the affected enemy on fire is the only permanent counter. This single rule is why fire-application gear carries so much value this season, since a Fafnir or Ember Engine build disables them as a side effect of normal damage.

  • Draining Presence: Within 5m, you lose 10% of your magazine and 1% of your gauge every second.
  • Achilles’ Heal: Breaking a weak point or armor piece restores 50% Health to the enemy and allies within 10m, and costs you 5% Pressure. Use body shots on the carrier until it burns.
  • Thousand Cuts: Every hit costs 1% Pressure and applies a stacking 0.5% Damage Reduction debuff for 15s, refreshing on each hit.

4. Dark Zone Overhaul and Blackout Variant

Toxic Dark Zone

Toxic Dark Zone

Red Horizon adds the uncapped Blackout Dark Zone to the rotation and makes the PvE Toxic Dark Zone permanent.

Variants rotate weekly across DZ West, East, and South, with one PvE zone and two PvP zones live at any time. Toxic and Balanced stay active every week, while Blackout and Classic alternate.

Variant Primary Focus Normalization SHD & Expertise
Classic Standard PvPvE risk Active Active
Balanced Competitive PvPvE Active Disabled
Toxic Permanent PvE farming Partial Active
Blackout Uncapped PvEvP Disabled Active

The Blackout Dark Zone (Uncapped PvEvP)

Blackout Dark Zone

Blackout Dark Zone

The Blackout DZ removes stat normalization completely, making it the first Dark Zone where your full build power applies in PvP. The zone sits permanently Invaded by the Black Tusk as the main faction, and Veteran, Elite, and Named enemies hit harder than in other variants.

Rogue Protocol stays active, and Global PvP Balance still governs weapons, gear, and Skills regardless of normalization. Prototype Gear runs uncapped base stats here, though its Augments still use the PvP-balanced values introduced in Y8S2.3.

Blackout Rewards and Drop Rates

Blackout loot drops at Heroic quality with a 20% chance for an extra contaminated item from the special pool, which now includes Ortiz: Reficere, Caduceus, and Nurse’s Kneepads. Prototype Gear also drops from enemies at these rates:

  • Normal enemies: 0.2% for a Prototype drop at mid stat rolls.
  • Elite enemies: 0.5% at mid stat rolls, plus 0.2% at high stat rolls.
  • Boss enemies: 1% at mid stat rolls, plus 2% at high stat rolls.

Exotic Component rates match the other PvP Dark Zones, so open every Landmark chest before you deconstruct anything:

  • Challenging Landmark Phoenix Crates: 33%.
  • Challenging Landmark Bosses: 40%.
  • Heroic Landmark Phoenix Crates: 40%.
  • Heroic Landmark Bosses: 48%.

The Permanent Toxic Dark Zone

Toxic DZ West

Toxic DZ West

The Toxic Dark Zone drops the Into the Dark seasonal mechanics it was originally built around, which turns it into a standalone farming space. Our Y8S2 Dark Zones guide covers the rulesets carrying over.

  • New factions: Other factions now spawn inside, including Black Tusk.
  • Removed mechanics: Sample Canisters and Surge are gone.
  • Toxicity: Values adjusted, and extracting your gear now clears your Toxicity level.
  • Normalization: Players still scale to level 40, but PvP overrides for talents, gear sets, skills, and weapons stay off, so those use PvE values against enemies.
  • Prototype Gear: Remains normalized here, matching Raid and Incursion rules.
  • Rewards: Landmark chests carry a 20% chance to drop a contaminated cache from the PvP special loot pool.

The extraction change is the practical one. Clearing Toxicity on extract turns every successful run into a reset, so short extraction loops now beat long deep-zone sessions.

5. Determined Rework and Marksman Rifle Builds

Buffed Aces & Eights Gear Set

Buffed Aces & Eights Gear Set

Determined now functions like Perfect Determined, which means a kill from a converted headshot no longer retriggers the talent. The chain that carried marksman rifle builds for years leaves the weapon talent slot and moves to the Iron Will Exotic Chest.

The change targets one interaction. Pairing the old Determined with Headhunter let a converted headshot kill restart the chain indefinitely, and that loop capped how far marksman rifles and their supporting gear can be buffed.

Moving the effect to the chest slot breaks the Headhunter pairing permanently. Red Horizon compensates with a direct buff pass on marksman rifle support gear.

  • Hotshot and Aces & Eights: Both gear sets receive buffs aimed at making Iron Will builds competitive.
  • Airaldi Holdings: 2-piece Headshot Damage rises from 13% to 26% in PvE.
  • Grupo Sombra: 3-piece Headshot Damage rises from 13% to 39% in PvE.
  • Brand Set MMR Damage: Marksman rifle damage bonuses increase across Brand Sets.
  • Handling pass: A separate Handling improvement for Marksman Rifles and Rifles is in development, with no release window attached yet.

6. PvP Balance and Quality of Life Improvements

The second Global PvP Balance phase targets time-to-kill and build variety. Skills receive changes to both base values and Skill Tier scaling across Conflict and every PvP Dark Zone, and several Bonus Armor talents come down, including Bloodsucker, Unbreakable, Protected Reload, and Adrenaline Rush.

PvP Stat Display, Blueprints, and Loot Pool Changes

PvP Updates

PvP Updates

Checking your real PvP numbers no longer requires guesswork. Your inventory now shows PvP weapon damage alongside the PvE value, and displayed stats switch automatically when you enter a PvP environment.

The Shooting Range gains PvP toggles for testing Normalization and Balance overrides before you queue, while the Inventory Normalization button is temporarily unavailable during the UI update.

Several blueprints also move into the General Loot Pool, and Inaya’s stock expands. Note that you need to own an item before its blueprint appears at her vendor:

  • General Loot Pool: True Patriot and Ongoing Directive materials, plus Unit Alloys, Royal Works, Edelweiss, Concentrated Company, Core Strength, and Ortiz: Reficere blueprints.
  • Available from Inaya: Agitator, Investor, Caduceus, Nurse’s Kneepads, Whiplash, and Underboss.
  • Targeted Loot: Caduceus and Nurse’s Kneepads added.
  • Steel & Sons ACR: Higher base Stability, maximum stacks raised from 3 to 4, and weak point destruction now applies +30% Amplified Damage for 5s, up from 10%.

7. Retaliation Anniversary and New Classified Assignments

New Classified Assignment

New Classified Assignment

Two dated activities anchor the Red Horizon calendar, and both carry rewards that expire. Retaliation turns one year old, and a special Project Chain runs from September 8 to September 22 to mark it, sending you back into Retaliations against different factions.

Each completed Project pays out materials and caches, with an Outfit Token as the final reward, unlocking one eligible store outfit of your choice. Alongside it, Retaliation Surge runs from September 8 to September 15 and doubles Retaliation Faction Materials from every source.

Front-load your runs into that first week. The Surge window covers only half the Project Chain, so farming during September 8 to 15 pays double while objectives progress at the same rate.

Two new Classified Assignments also arrive on separate dates. Access unlocks at Level 30 through the Assignments tab on the map, and both are included in the Red Horizon Bundle:

  1. The District Mall Inferno (August 27): Agent Felix McNally is attacked while recovering broad-spectrum antivirals, with the Cleaners closing in and an unknown assailant tied to an SHD anomaly unaccounted for.
  2. The Georgetown Dead Zone (October 15): A section of Georgetown sits outside SHD network coverage, and a JTF engineer team sent to install new tech has gone missing.

8. Season Pass, Bundle, and Supply Drop Rewards

Red Horizon Season Pass

Red Horizon Season Pass

The Y8S3 Season Pass is priced at 1,000 Premium Credits and is accessible from Level 1, though some rewards stay locked until Level 40. The detail that matters most for free players is that both launch Exotics sit on the free track, so no purchase is needed to get Fafnir or Iron Will.

Free and Premium Track Rewards

The free track carries the season’s headline power, while the premium track leans toward materials, cosmetics, and a Credit rebate that returns 40% of the pass cost.

  • Free track Exotics: Fafnir Exotic Weapon and the Iron Will Exotic Chest.
  • Free track loot: 2 Named Weapons, 4 Named Gear Items, 2 Exotic Caches, 18 Red Horizon Caches, and 3 Named Item Caches.
  • Premium track loot: 1 extra Fafnir copy for Expertise leveling, 3 Exotic Caches, 9 Optimization Material Caches, and 9 Crafting Material Caches.
  • Premium track currency: 400 Premium Credits.
