Mortal Shell 2 – Best Weapon Tier List

Rank every Mortal Shell 2 weapon from best to worst, with the strongest choices for bosses, crowd control, heavy damage, and fast melee builds.

Mortal Shell 2 - Best Weapon Tier ListMortal Shell 2 has seven main melee weapons, ranging from fast dual-wield setups to heavy axes, hammers, and long-reaching weapons.

Every weapon can clear the game when properly upgraded, but some offer much stronger attack speed, Tarstone synergy, Resolve generation, crowd control, and boss damage than others.

The Axe & Dagger is the best overall weapon because its rapid multi-hit attacks work exceptionally well with effects such as Duality Stone and Blood Curse, while the Axatana is the strongest alternative for players who want similar speed with greater moveset flexibility.

The Iconoclast

The Iconoclast

This ranking focuses only on the seven main melee weapons, not Sidearms. Weapons are ranked by overall damage potential, attack speed, range, safety, crowd control, Tarstone synergy, and usefulness throughout a full playthrough.

Tier Weapon Best For
S Axe & Dagger Best overall weapon and multi-hit builds
S Axatana Fast endgame builds and versatile combat
S Clockwork Scythe Crowd control and wide-area attacks
A Black Needle Reach, speed, and safe melee combat
A Great Martyr’s Blade Heavy damage and charged attacks
A Veteran’s Battle Axe Strong early-game damage
B Obsidian Hammer Stagger and knockback

2. S Tier Weapons

The S Tier contains the strongest weapons for general play. Axe & Dagger provides the best combination of accessibility and build synergy, while Axatana and Clockwork Scythe become excellent options once you reach their later-game locations.

2.1. Axe & Dagger – Best Weapon in Mortal Shell 2

Axe & Dagger

Axe & Dagger

The Axe & Dagger is the best overall weapon in Mortal Shell 2. It attacks quickly, lands multiple hits in a short window, builds Resolve efficiently, and has outstanding synergy with Tarstones that benefit from repeated melee hits.

It is also obtainable relatively early from the Shrine of Trials, meaning you can build around it for most of the game. Its biggest advantage is the Duality Stone.

When upgraded, Duality Stone causes attacks in the light combo to strike twice, dramatically increasing the value of the Axe & Dagger’s already fast moveset. Those extra hits also accelerate Resolve generation and status buildup.

  • Extremely fast light attacks
  • Excellent multi-hit damage
  • Generates Resolve quickly
  • Excellent with Duality Stone
  • Rapidly builds effects such as Blood Curse
  • Available early
  • Strong against normal enemies and bosses
  • Works with several different Shell builds

2.2. Axatana – Best Endgame Weapon

Axatana

Axatana

The Axatana is another top-tier weapon because it combines a fast multi-hit moveset with the flexibility expected from its hybrid design. It functions similarly to Axe & Dagger during rapid attack strings but provides its own powerful Tarstone combinations and greater endgame build variety.

It also works extremely well with Duality Stone, making its rapid attacks particularly effective for triggering effects tied to repeated melee hits. Current endgame builds use Axatana for precisely this reason.

  • Fast multi-hit attacks
  • Excellent sustained damage
  • Strong Tarstone compatibility
  • Works well with Duality Stone
  • Good against bosses and regular enemies
  • Flexible enough for several Shell builds
  • Excellent late-game scaling

2.3. Clockwork Scythe – Best Weapon for Groups

Clockwork Scythe

Clockwork Scythe

The Clockwork Scythe earns S Tier because of its excellent sweeping attacks and area coverage. Where Axe & Dagger and Axatana excel at quickly overwhelming a target, the Clockwork Scythe is especially useful when several enemies attack simultaneously.

Its wide arcs can connect with several enemies during the same attack sequence, making encounters against groups much easier to control.

  • Excellent sweeping attacks
  • Strong area damage
  • Good range
  • Effective against groups
  • Strong critical-damage Tarstone options
  • Good mix of damage and crowd control

3. A Tier Weapons

A Tier weapons remain extremely strong but either require more specialized setups or lose out to S Tier alternatives in overall versatility. Black Needle excels at reach, Great Martyr’s Blade delivers heavy individual hits, and Veteran’s Battle Axe provides one of the best early-game power spikes.

3.1. Black Needle – Best Weapon for Reach

Black Needle

Black Needle

The Black Needle is an excellent choice for players who want to remain slightly farther away from enemies without sacrificing attack speed. Its spear-style moveset provides good reach, quick strikes, and solid gap-closing ability, making it safer than many close-range weapons.

  • Excellent melee range
  • Quick attacks
  • Good gap closing
  • Safer positioning against dangerous enemies
  • Strong stagger options
  • Good Tarstone compatibility

The Nightgrasp Stone is also a weapon-specific Infusion option for Black Needle, giving it additional build potential once you begin specializing your equipment.

3.2. Great Martyr’s Blade – Best Heavy Blade

Great Martyr's Blade

Great Martyr’s Blade

The Great Martyr’s Blade offers high base damage, excellent reach, and an exceptionally powerful charged light attack. The tradeoff is its slower attack speed, meaning missed attacks leave you more exposed than with the faster weapons above it.

  • Very high damage per hit
  • Powerful charged light attack
  • Excellent reach
  • Strong against staggered enemies
  • Good boss damage
  • Strong specialized Infusion potential

3.3. Veteran’s Battle Axe – Best Early Heavy Weapon

Veteran's Battle Axe

Veteran’s Battle Axe

Veteran’s Battle Axe is one of the strongest weapons you can acquire early. It comes with an immediate upgrade advantage and provides powerful two-handed attacks capable of throwing or disrupting regular enemies.

  • Excellent early-game damage
  • Strong heavy attacks
  • Good enemy displacement
  • Strong running opener
  • Effective against standard enemies
  • Available relatively early

4. B Tier – Obsidian Hammer

The Obsidian Hammer specializes in heavy hits, knockback, and controlling individual enemies. It can be effective with the right build, but its slower attacks make encounters against fast groups noticeably harder than with the higher-ranked weapons.

4.1. Obsidian Hammer

Obsidian Hammer

Obsidian Hammer

The hammer’s strength is its ability to hit hard and physically disrupt enemies. Against slower opponents or targets vulnerable to stagger, it can control a fight extremely well.

  • High impact per attack
  • Strong knockback
  • Good stagger potential
  • Effective against slower enemies
  • Useful for heavy builds

Its weaknesses become more noticeable when several fast enemies surround you. The slower attack sequence gives opponents more opportunities to interrupt or punish you, while weapons such as Clockwork Scythe handle groups more effectively.
